What is an indirect speech act?

2019

Abstract The notion of an indirect speech act is at the very heart of cognitive pragmatics, yet, after nearly 50 years of orthodox (Searlean) speech act theory, it remains largely unclear how this notion can be explicated in a proper way. In recent years, two debates about indirect speech acts have stood out. First, a debate about the Searlean idea that indirect speech acts constitute a simultaneous realization of a secondary and a primary act. Second, a debate about the reasons for the use of indirect speech acts, in particular about whether this reason is to be seen in strategic advantages and/or observation of politeness demands. In these debates, the original pragmatic conception of sen…

Linguistic interpretation of speech errors

2016

The paper is an attempt to illustrate the linguistic interpretation of speech, known that it remains insufficiently resolved, especially for Romanian. The cause is given by the multitude of criteria that can or should be considered important in speech processing. The aim of this study is to develope a computational tool in order to identify the possible errors related to the morphosintactic structure of speech. Our goal is to assist users who can receive automatically different suggestions that can help them to improve the quality of their text. Thus, we chose an interdisciplinary approach through speech analysis that brings together the key fields of linguistics, computer science and so on…

On the social practice of indirect reports (further advances in the theory of pragmemes)

2010

Abstract This paper deals with the social practice of indirect reports and treats them as cases of language games. It proposes a number of principles like the following: Paraphrasis/Form Principle The that-clause embedded in the verb ‘say’ is a paraphrasis of what Y said, and meets the following constraints: should Y hear what X said he (Y) had said, he would not take issue with it, as to content, but would approve of it as a fair paraphrasis of his original utterance. Furthermore, he would not object to vocalizing the assertion made out of the words following the complementizer ‘that’ on account of its form/style. Furthermore, it connects such principles with Relevance Theory consideration…

Expressing evidentiality through prosody? Prosodic voicing in reported speech in Spanish colloquial conversations

2015

Abstract The present paper attempts to establish the evidential character of the special prosodic configuration associated with direct reported discourse (DRD). A variety of expressive meanings have been commonly attributed to this marked prosodic configuration of DRD (such as expression of stance, emotion, mimicking, alignment). However, the concurrence of pragmatic/expressive meanings together with evidentiality is very frequent in ‘non-evidential’ languages like Spanish. Therefore, we argue that the prosody in DRD also signals ‘reported’ or ‘quoted’ discourse and, therefore, the presence of evidentiality. To provide evidence for this latter claim, 449 instances of DRD have been extracted…

Izvairīšanās no lingvistiski-pragmatiskās kļūdas angļu valodā

2019
